Pitt Law’s Online tuition and technology fee are qualifying expenses for the federal Lifetime Learning Credit.

The MSL program will be charged at the MSL rate listed above for the MSL courses, while the specialization courses will be charged at the certificate rate. MSL, HCC, and HRL courses are eligible for federal financial aid. Read the FAQs for more information.

The MSL degree and the graduate certificates are an investment in both your career and your future success. Prospective students are encouraged to contact their employers to determine if tuition assistance is available. Before exploring your loan options, know that many employers provide tuition assistance to employees. If you are working, you should inquire with your employer. Many of our students have sought scholarships and funding from outside entities, often focusing on particular scholarships opportunities that match their individual profiles. Students who are not sponsored by their companies often qualify for loans and financial aid.

To be eligible for federal financial aid for the Online MSL programs, the Health Care Compliance Certificate, or HR Law Certificate at Pitt Law, applicants need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Financial Aid is not available at this time for the Corporate Compliance, International Business Law, and Sports, Entertainment and Arts Law certificate programs. Federal Financial Aid may become available for these programs in the future. To give yourself the best opportunity for an award, please submit your FAFSA as early as possible. This will also help as you plan your finances in advance of your start date.

How much does the Online Master of Studies in Law (MSL) program cost?

The cost of each course for the Online MSL program is determined by the number of registered credit hours. To determine the cost of one course, multiply the current tuition rate by the number of credits required.

What type of financing is available for the Online MSL?

We understand that it can be difficult to find the funds to cover your tuition and other expenses. The Online MSL program does not offer financial aid in the form of grants to students. Pitt Law will, however, assist you in processing any federal loans.

What type of financial aid is available for the Graduate Certificates?

Federal financial aid is available for the MSL, Health Care Compliance and HR Law Certificate programs. Private loans are also an option for these programs.

Private educational loans are also available to help you finance your tuition in the Corporate Compliance, International Business Law, or Sports, Entertainment, and Arts Law certificates, and federal financial aid may become available in the future.

What is the Federal Direct Loan Program?

The University of Pittsburgh participates in the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program exclusively for the Federal Unsubsidized and Federal Grad PLUS Loans. The lender for the Direct Loan Program is the U.S. Department of Education. More information concerning the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program can be found online at StudentAid.gov.

What types of loans are available in the Federal Direct Loan Program?

Federal Unsubsidized Loans
The Unsubsidized Loan is the most widely used loan and is regulated by the U.S. Department of Education. The Unsubsidized Loan is a guaranteed student loan and is NOT based on credit. More information can be found online at StudentAid.gov.

Federal Graduate PLUS Loan
The Federal Graduate PLUS Loan program is a federal loan program available to graduate students. This is a federally backed loan that is based on a simplified credit check criteria. More information can be found online at StudentAid.gov.

What are private loans?

Various agencies offer private student loan programs to law students. These programs are often offered by commercial banks and other lenders and are not funded by state or federal financial aid funds. The terms of lending, maximum loan amounts, schedules for repayment, interest rates, fees and qualifications are determined by each organization.

Borrowers are strongly encouraged to consider the federal student loans and compare interest rates, fees, and repayment options such as deferment and forbearance of all loans.

What is the FAFSA?

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the application the Department of Education uses to determine if you are eligible to receive federal student aid.

Where can I find the FAFSA?

The FAFSA is available online by visiting the Federal Student Aid website. The FAFSA is a free application; you will not be asked to pay.

When should I complete the FAFSA?

The FAFSA is available every October 1 for the upcoming academic year. New students planning to use federal student aid should complete a FAFSA while applying for admission. The FAFSA must be completed each academic year in order to remain eligible for federal student aid.
